Sushi Moon on the corner of Brimhall Road and Calloway Drive is the newest addition to the various sushi restaurants in Bakersfield since its opening in February of 2013. According to yelp.com, there are approximately 27 sushi restaurants in Bakersfield. Yelp.com is a website where people can post a review on restaurants, stores, and more. Check it out at http://www.yelp.com/bakersfield-ca-us. So what sets Sushi Moon apart from the others?

Sushi Moon offers a variety of traditional yet modern Asian cuisine, with a great range of items to satisfy anyone’s taste buds.  With a menu of more than 200 items including classic sushi rolls, decorative sushi, seafood, and Korean BBQ, it will definitely be a challenge for any customer to decide what to order.

Sushi Moon is located at a busy intersection, but when entering the restaurant one is welcomed to a relaxing atmosphere. The restaurant is decorated elegantly. The restaurant is dark, with the walls painted black and pops of red in the curtains. There is a wine room that displays all the wines the restaurant offers. There are various flowers located all over the restaurant, and beautiful chandeliers hanging from the ceilings. The tables are spacious with comfortable chairs and a small candle on each table. The restaurant is very detailed with a feminine touch.

The décor of the restaurant was designed by one of the owners, Tammy King.

“She is very fashionable. She owns the clothing store on Stockdale highway, Fashion and Fame. She is really trendy,” said Aeriel Cummings, the restaurant manager and server.

Cummings has been working at the restaurant since its opening in February of 2013.

When asked by customers what Cummings recommends she suggests a meal based on people’s preferences: “People always ask me for my recommendation; I always ask them whether they like fresh fish or deep fried fish and depending on what their answer is I usually recommend a couple rolls. Some people come in just for the meal. I recommend the poke bowl,” Cummings said.  The poke bowl consists of tuna, salmon, and white fish.

For people who are new to sushi, Cummings recommends tempura rolls. Tempura rolls are different types of sushi that have been battered and deep fried.

One of the most popular meals on the menu are the lunch bowls. The Bibimpap Bowl consists of assorted vegetables with beef bulgogi, a fried egg on top, and crisped rice with sweet spicy sauce.

What makes Sushi Moon unique from other restaurants in Bakersfield is the wide selection of food, said Cummings.

“Until I started working here I figured out the difference between a fresh fish and something you can tell has been frozen for a long time,” she said. The menu has about 40 rolls and three selections of rolls to choose from. They include fresh fish rolls, teriyaki rolls, and baked rolls. A baked roll is a classic sushi roll with baked fish on the outside. “So we have a huge selection, more than I even realized that other restaurants didn’t have,” said Cummings.

Another unique aspect of Sushi Moon is the presentation of the sushi. Three cooks prepare the meals fresh in front of the customers. The cooks decorate the plate of sushi to appear as flowers or birds. The images of the decorative sushi can be seen on the restaurant’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/SushiMoonBakersfield

Customer Jose Romo says Sushi Moon is one of his favorite restaurants. “I love sushi, my favorite dish is the crunchy salmon talaki,” Romo says. The crunchy salmon talaki has shrimp tempura, crab and avocado on the inside and seared salmon and crispy onion on the inside.

Sushi is my absolute favorite food of all time. I love the diversity of all the restraunts that have started popping up around town. I’ve become increasingly fond of Toro both in the marketplace and Rosedale, but I would love to try this new place out!!

I’ve been wanting to go to Sushi Moon since it opened, but I never got the chance. I heard so many good things about it, but I also heard that there’s some sort of dress code in order to dine in. Not sure whether this is true though.
